In our FRR series, we interviewed pet industry experts and animal lovers for their advice during the holidays.
The pawesome tips can be applied to gatherings year-round, paw-ticularly for new dog parents. With Valentine's Day coming up and a slew of birthdays and Gotcha days, we had to outline some best practices. We didn't want to keep it to our ruffin' selves.

Birthday & Howl-iday Gift Tips

  • stimulating chews, toys or games

  • avoid rawhides, not easy for pets to digest, sometimes made with glue and other non pet-friendly components

  • when buying for a friend, first ask paw-rents about pet's diet

  • buy from a reputable company

  • always think of the dog or cat's safety first

  • have a leash on the pooch

  • have yummy treats and a reward system in place

  • designate a management area

  • practice a routine before guests arrive

  • get everyone on board in the house, prepare the family to help also tell guests the dos and don'ts around the pet

  • avoid new commands, don't reinvent the wheel to close the date of

    a gathering. The pet is not likely to learn new things in two weeks.

  • watch pets trying to escape when you or guests open the door

  • place candles so they can't be tipped over by pets

  • have a separate area for the pet to relax

  • use ribbon or yarn to hand ornaments and decorations, avoid metal hooks

  • no chocolate!
